To listen to Linton Kwesi Johnson speak is to witness a living bridge between UK political struggle and colourful Jamaican artistry. A prominent figure in the Caribbean Artists Movement, a key organiser within the British Black Panther Movement, and a tireless champion of Black British activism, LKJ’s legacy is well solidified and recognised by many.

Today’s digest was created in response to the live film screening & poetry recital that he hosted at the Barbican, London this week.

As LKJ recited poems written over the past 40 years, what stood out was his advocacy for elevating Jamaican vernacular into formal literary discourse, challenging the white, colonial gatekeepers of literature. He referenced ‘Miss Lou’ (you will see more about her in the list below), who taught us the same thing: our dialects, our oral traditions, and lived experiences are legitimate forms of knowledge that deserve to be preserved, archived, and celebrated on our own terms.

When LKJ casually drops reading and listening recommendations, we listen!
